I went old school a while ago and ordered a couple of CDs from Amazon UK. I listen to BBC radio a lot and they have live sessions regularly, where artists perform live. They often perform their own music and they often perform covers. The compilation albums I purchased were some BBC sessions from a couple of different stations. Radio 6 and Dermot O’Leary’s Saturday Sessions on BBC 2.
If you want to check out whether a song is good, the best way is to hear an acoustic version. A song stripped bare soon shows its real colours.
Not all the songs I’ve been listening to are acoustic. But some of the performances are brilliant.
Here are two of my favourites recently – one from Dermot’s CD, Ella Henderson covering James Bay’s Hold Back the River. She’s got a great voice (the video is not from Dermot’s show, but another BBC session she did for their live lounge). And Mumford and Sons “Believe” from Maida Vale on Jo Whiley’s show last week. I do like their new album … that will be a purchase soon, but may be not an old school CD – that will probably be an online purchase.
