Today the six of us ventured out for brunch at the relocated Strawberry Fare. The old venue in Peterborough Street closed after the earthquakes badly damaged the building. The new venue, in Bealey Avenue, has a modern clean decor and a lovely outlook towards Hagley Park. It has quite a different vibe to the lovely old building it was in, due to the different decor and style, but it was a fresh and “open” vibe with the airy room and natural light from all sides. We were seated at the windows overlooking Bealey Avenue, so had great views of the busy corner and the start of the Park.
I’ve never been a huge fan of Strawberry Fare – despite being a dessert freak! I guess I’ve just not had the best outings in the past – and because of that it’s not somewhere I have been in a very long long time (at least a decade). The fact that Strawberry Fare has been going that long says a lot about the place, however, so I had no qualms about heading there today and it fell into our “relocated” rules to allow us to return. I’m glad we did.
The service was good, efficient and friendly. Drinks were ordered and after a few minutes deliberation we made our orders for brunch. The orders were delivered quickly and efficiently with no problems.
Our group had a range of food – eggs bene, corn fritters (one with and one without bacon), field mushrooms, salmon and blueberry pancakes. Normally I’d say that covers the menu very well, but actually the menu is very vast with plenty more to choose from – I’m surprised we managed so quickly, given that more choice often makes us dilly-dally a bit!
All the plates were cleaned up and everyone declared the food fabulous. All in all, it was and excellent choice and I will consider returning to Strawberry Fare… perhaps to have dessert next time!
