Last night we went to Kinji Restaurant, 279B Greers Road, Christchurch.
This delightful wee place was a pleasant surprise. From the road, the shops on Greers Road all look a little sad. You open the door of Kinji and are taken in to a warm and cosy place. It is small, but unlike many small restaurants, they haven’t tried to squeeze too many tables in, so everyone has a sense of space while they dine.
The menu is quite extensive. It was my turn to pick and one of my friends commented surprise at a Japanese restaurant as I don’t eat seafood, but there was plenty for me to choose from. We chose starters – Edamame Beans for me, Deep Fried Octopus and Miso Soups for the others. They came out rather swiftly after ordering.
For mains I chose the Marbled Beef Carpaccio Salad, others chose 3 Kinds of Shashimi, Mussels (from the specials menu), Pan Fried Scallops & Roasted Garlic with Salad, and there were three Teppan Sizzle plates – beef and chicken were chosen. The food really was outstanding. My Marbled Beef was just sublime! The only downside was my friend’s Pan Fried Scallops didn’t turn up – when asked they apologised, they had been given to another table. A bowl of complimentary Edamame beans were given to her almost straight away and within minutes the scallops turned up. My friend’s plate was clean, so they were worth the wait.
The service was rather good – the staff happy to explain items on the menu, or how certain things on the menu worked, change orders and things like water bottles were topped up regularly. A nice touch was the baskets for our handbags so they weren’t sitting on the floor – and hot towels for some diners (must have gone with what they ordered, for wiping hands). So the meal mix up was unfortunate, but I like the way they swiftly dealt with it and were apologetic.
Dessert on offer included a Green Tea Tiramisu and yes, Creme Brulee was also on the menu. Two Tiramisus and two Brulees were ordered!
All in all, a pleasant evening was had by all. With two glasses of wine, and my starters, main and dessert I paid $50 so very reasonable and the food really was quite superb!
